Thinking outside the box To help you and your organization succeed
One-sentence summary: I’m a gregarious, outdoor-sports loving, art-appreciating, politically-savvy computer scientist, entrepreneur, consultant and writer.
I like helping organize people, teams, departments and companies to more effectively produce value. Creating highly productive groups through reorganization has been a driving theme in my life for over 30 years.
I am currently an agile enterprise consultant, helping companies rapidly adapt to new market conditions and risks.
From 2007 to 2012, I worked for Citrix Online as Director, Agile Program Office and User Experience. I worked with the heads of Engineering and Product Management to optimize developer effort, maximize value and satisfy new markets. I spearheaded the adoption of Scrum and other agile methods throughout the company, training over 200 people. During my 4-year tenure, Citrix Online raised its release rate by a factor of 5, and gained market share to become the number 2 provider of collaboration software.
I have been involved in several software startups. Some gained liquidity, one did not. I also keep a toe in academia: I co-chaired the Hawaii International Conference on Systems Science Agile/Lean track with Jeff Sutherland. I was Principal Investigator on three National Science Foundation grants.
I love to travel. This photo has a story: A CEO pal of mine (he was a client) had a meeting in New York. Happy with our efforts to restructure his engineering department and knowing my love of art, he invited my husband and me along in his jet (wow) to New York City, and put us in a Central Park hotel. The snow was falling on Christo’s Gates. We spent the next day wandering in the snow, under the gates, enjoying life.
When profession, recreation and creativity flow seamlessly, when I can’t distinguish work from fun, that’s when life is good.
I help companies and people succeed
My mission is to help companies, employees, and people succeed. If you want my help: ask.
Here’s what corporate leaders say about my work.
Dan worked for me at CitrixOnline for 3 years. Under his leadership we were able to transform a 350 person waterfall development department into a highly effective agile/scrum organization. Dan has unparalleled knowledge in agile, scrum and development efficiency. His results oriented guidance decreased the average time for project delivery by more than 80%. I would recommend him to head engineering or agile programs for any organization interested in development efficiency or agile processes.
Dan is highly motivated. He has a passion for improving organisational effectiveness using agile principles. Dan is open with sharing his deep knowledge around Scrum and was a supportive member of the agile transformation team at Skype. I’d worked with Dan again.
Head of Product Agility, Skype/Microsoft now: Product and Technology Advisor, Global Technology Venture Fund
The detailed research Dan Greening did on capitalization is going to save me a significant amount of time and energy. Specifically, his research into the GAAP and FASB guidance on software capitalization. His summaries cut through years of poor capitalization guidance for Agile projects.
Awesome work. Must read.
Head of Product Operations, Physicians Mutual
It was such a pleasure working with Dan. After our prior UX manager headed out to pursue other opportunities, Dan stepped in and not only managed the entire COL UX team (about 25 designers) he also managed the Agile program at Citrix Online. I honestly dont know how he did it. Even though I am sure he always had 100 things going on he was always able to make time for us to hear us out. He not only worked with us on strategy, leadership, and process, but he trained us on those things as well. He really valued self-reliance and self-governance in those he worked with. He taught and encouraged us to take responsibility and MAKE things happen rather than wait around for someone to come along and tell us what to do. Those skills I will take with me wherever I go and for that I thank you!
Sr. User Experience Designer, Citrix Online now: Principal UX Designer, Alexa Skills Kit, Amazon

I travel internationally for work, and there I live life as an alien. I practise few local customs well. I have few local friends. I must observe, think carefully, and adapt. I must ask questions we haven’t asked since we were 5. Which phrase means “Men’s Locker Room”? How do I avoid being fleeced, when…
